Centipede grass originated in Southern China in the early 1900s and since has grown to be one of the most popular grasses in the South. Centipede grass likes full sun and is slightly shade tolerant. This warm season grass is medium to light green colored. 

Centipede grass is a low maintenance option compared to other warm season grasses. The short upright stems have a coarse texture and grow to about 3-5 inches. Busy lawn growers like this type of slow growing creeping grass because there’s more time between mowing cycles. 

Centipede grass is mostly drought tolerant. Plus, it adapts well to sandy, acidic soils and survives mild cold temperatures without going into full dormancy. If it does freeze a little it will turn brown, but as soon as temperatures rise it turns green again.
